Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS), or compression of the nerve that runs through the middle of the wrist (Carpal Tunnel), can lead to numbness, tingling, and muscle weakness in the hand. The diagnosis of CTS is often misapplied to patients who have activity-related arm pain.

Most cases of CTS tend to be caused by a muscle imbalance in the forearm, which can progress to the point that they cause compression of the median nerve.

Hand pain and numbness at nighttime, the hallmark of this illness, can be managed effectively with night-time wrist splinting in most patients. The role of medications, including corticosteroid injection into the carpal canal, is unclear.

Surgery to cut the transverse carpal ligament can be effective at relieving symptoms and preventing ongoing nerve damage, but it carries its own risks. Dr. Arsenault only recommends surgery in cases where the nerve has been damaged (myelin or axomal degeneration) due to long term compression. This diagnosis can be made with a Deep Needle EMG Study performed by a neurologist.

Dr. Arseneault uses the Thuli mini-drop table to successfully rehabilitate even serious cases of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome.
