Facet Syndrome

There are three joints in each vertebra, which form a tripod. The "disk" is the joint in the front, and it is responsible for bearing 60% of your weight. The "facets" are the two joints on the back, which bear the other 40% of your weight.

Facet Syndrome is probably the most common cause of low back pain. It is caused by degeneration of those three joints. It presents as low back pain that increases on extension, radiates to the back of the thigh, and ends at the knee. Narrowing of disk space and osteophyte formation can be revealed by x-ray and CT imaging.

Treatment includes chiropractic care, which has been shown to be highly effective in treating low back pain. Other treatments may include NSAIDs, intraarticular injections with anesthetics, low back fusion with osteodegeneration, and endurance training.
