Low Velocity Manipulation

Dr. Arsenault uses several methods of Low Velocity Manipulation, including the Sacro-Occipital Technique (SOT), CoxFlexion Distraction, and Activator.

SOT stands for Sacro Occipital Technique. "Sacro" means "related to, or associated with, the sacrum". The sacrum is the foundation for the spine. The sacrum is often called the tail bone though this is not exactly correct. "Occipital" means "related to or associated with the occiput". Occiput means "the back of the head". So, SOT is a method of normalizing the relationship between the foundation of the spine and the top of the spine. It is this relationship and how these two bones get along with one another, that has been proven to be so important in the normal functioning of the brain and spinal cord.

SOT blocks or wedges were first introduced to the chiropractic profession in the 1960s. They can be used to modify body placement, actively affecting joint position, body fluid circulation, rib cage and respiratory function as well as spinal vertebral discopathy. The SOT blocks can be placed under the patient's body while face up or face down, on both sides or just one, and can be applied to the pelvis, vertebra, rib cage, clavicles and virtually any other part of the body. Placing of the blocks allows the ligaments that have been stretched abnormally to tighten and shorten. Conversely, the ligaments that have become compressed are allowed to stretch.

SOT blocks are most commonly used in the treatment of three specific categories of diagnoses: the first associated with the anterior sacroiliac joint and its synovial membrane, the second associated with the posterior sacroiliac joint and its posterior weight bearing ligaments, and the third category associated with sciatica and lumbar discopathy.

CoxFlexion Distraction was developed by James M. Cox in the early 1970s. It essentially tries to stretch out the back to alleviate pressure between the spinal discs. Dr. Cox designed a special examining table, with moveable segments to be used during the process. The table's parts can move and down as well as side to side, and in a circular motion.

With this chiropractic method, the patient will lay face down on the table and the doctor will gently help to stretch the lower spine with slow, careful movements. Each of the adjustments is tested to make sure the patient experiences no pain during the process.

This is not a method that uses thrusts or jerks. It has been found very useful for those who have specific problems with their spinal discs, like herniated or ruptured discs. It was created to mimic the body's natural form to make the healing process natural as well. The stretching motions are believed to help reduce muscles spasms and increase the blood flow through the treated areas, speeding up their recovery time.

The Activator chiropractic technique uses the latest advances in orthopedic, neurological and chiropractic examinations to seek out joint dysfunction in the spinal column and extremities. The Activator Adjusting Instrument provides consistent low-force, high-speed chiropractic adjustments that are gentle, specific, and painless.

The Activator adjusting hand held instrument provides a consistent low-force, high-speed Chiropractic adjustment that is gentle, specific, and painless. Patients usually do not experience any discomfort from this type of Chiropractic adjustment.
